Tyson Foods, Wells Fargo New Registered Apprenticeship Programs
Iowa Ag Connection - 11/15/2017

Gov. Kim Reynolds and Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg announced two new registered apprenticeship programs in Iowa Tuesday at the administration's weekly press conference. Both companies--Wells Fargo and Tyson Foods--signed their registered apprenticeship standards at the press conference.

"Today is an exciting day as two well-known national companies with a large footprint in Iowa make commitments to offering registered apprenticeship programs," Gov. Reynolds said. "This is significant because expanding registered apprenticeship opportunities in our states helps train Iowans for the jobs of today and tomorrow."

"Thank you to Wells Fargo and Tyson Foods for making Iowa's registered apprenticeship program even stronger," Lt. Gov. Gregg said. "This demonstrates why Iowa is a national leader in offering registered apprenticeship programs."

Registered apprenticeship is an employer-driven training program that provides on-the-job learning with related classroom instruction. It also allows registered apprentices to earn a paycheck from day one. The program is a proven solution for recruiting, training and retaining world-class talent in Iowa.

The standards Wells Fargo signed are national standards because their registered apprenticeship program is now offered in all 50 states. Four occupations are being offered in Iowa: bank branch manager, operations management, project management and risk consultations.

Tyson Foods signed standards to offer a registered apprenticeship in mechatronics technician. Mechatronics is a multidisciplinary field of science that includes a combination of mechanical engineering, electronics, computer engineering, telecommunications engineering, systems engineering and control engineering.

Iowa is a national leader in offering registered apprenticeship opportunities. As of Nov. 2, Iowa had 846 active registered apprenticeship programs and 8,720 active registered apprentices. Gov. Reynolds was also recently appointed to serve on the President's Task Force on Apprenticeship Expansion, which is an incredible opportunity to showcase Iowa's leadership in promoting and expanding registered apprenticeship programs.

National Registered Apprenticeship Appreciation and Awareness Week is Nov. 13-17, and Iowa is using this opportunity to highlight the state's successful registered apprenticeship programs and encourage more businesses and job seekers to consider registered apprenticeship opportunities.

"Growing registered apprenticeship opportunities will help us reach our Future Ready Iowa goal of 70 percent of the workforce having education or training beyond high school by the year 2025," Gov. Reynolds said. "The Future Ready Iowa Alliance just made five recommendations to help reach that goal. Registered apprenticeship aligns with the third recommendation: to expand high-quality work-based learning experiences in high-demand careers to all students, but particularly those who are underserved."
