Plymouth County Leads Iowa Soybean Production

In 2018, 4 Iowa counties had total production of over 10 million bushels of soybeans, led by Plymouth County, with 12.5 million bushels according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Kossuth (12.3 million), Sioux (10.6 million) and Woodbury (10.3 million) also topped the 10 million bushel threshold. Benton (9.36 million) rounded out the top 5 highest production counties.

The East Central District produced the highest district average yield at 61.1 bushels per acre, followed closely by the Southeast District at 60.9 bushels per acre. Thirty-one counties averaged at least 60 bushels per acre. For the second year in a row Sioux County had the highest yield with an average of 67.0 bushels per acre. Lee (65.9), Cherokee (65.5), Delaware and Ida (65.3) rounded out the top 5. Lucas County recorded the lowest yield at 42.3 bushels per acre.

Yields are derived from production divided by area harvested. Only published estimates were considered in rankings of districts and counties.
