Dubuque Leads Iowa in Alfalfa Hay Production

The Northeast District was Iowa's district with the largest alfalfa hay production in 2018 with 557,900 tons according to estimates released by the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service. The South Central District was second with 393,800 tons.

Dubuque led Iowa counties in alfalfa hay production with 116,100 tons produced. Jackson, Allamakee, Winneshiek, and Clayton completed the top five.

Lyon led all counties with an average yield of 4.80 tons per acre. Dubuque, Jackson, Polk, and Clayton also averaged 4.25 tons per acre or better.

The South Central District was Iowa's district with the largest production of all other hay in 2018 with 224,000 tons. The Southeast District was second with 100,300 tons.

Appanoose led Iowa counties in all other hay production with 26,200 tons produced. Lucas, Adams, Monroe, and Warren were the other counties producing at least 10,000 tons.

Muscatine led all counties with an average of 3.45 tons per acre. Adams, Scott, Emmet, and Ida also averaged at least 2.75 tons per acre.

Yields are derived from production divided by area harvested. Only published estimates were considered in rankings of districts and counties.
