Unveiling the Secrets of Woodchips in Iowa's Bioreactors
Iowa Ag Connection - 01/26/2024

Iowa Learning Farms, in partnership with the Iowa Nutrient Research Center and Conservation Learning Group, invites you to a virtual field day on Feb. 8, focusing on an innovative study investigating woodchips for bioreactors. The event kicks off at 1 p.m. Central time and features live discussions with experts, including Michelle Soupir, professor of agricultural and biosystems engineering at Iowa State University, Billy Beck, assistant professor and extension forestry specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach, and Ji Yeow Law, agricultural engineer at Iowa State.

Denitrifying bioreactors play a crucial role in reducing nitrate losses from Iowa's landscape. They channel tile drainage water through woodchip-filled trenches, promoting denitrification. The study, led by Soupir and Beck, aims to explore different woodchip types for bioreactors, addressing the need for nearly 120,000 bioreactors in Iowa. The project focuses on sourcing more wood, experimenting with different types and sizes of woodchips, and even exploring shredded wood to enhance nitrate removal effectiveness.

The study also emphasizes improving woodland management options for farmers and landowners to ensure the health and resilience of forested areas. Without active management, there's a risk of overstocked or crowded forests, particularly with shade-tolerant species like hackberry and basswood. Thinning overstocked woodlands promotes vigorous stands that are more resilient to disease, climatic shifts, and other stressors. The project also seeks to develop a stronger market value for shade-tolerant species, encouraging more active forest management.
